Supporting NO on N: Keep San Benito Free of Sprawl Proposed at the County Line Near Gilroy

Our Executive Board recently voted to support the Coalition to Protect San Benito County. This group was formed to defeat a huge, 2,700-acre, land-grab Initiative, Measure N, put on their ballot by the Newport Pacific Land Company, a powerful out-of-town housing developer. We want to support the No on N campaign because:

  • This project is actually closer to Gilroy than to Hollister and the traffic on our roads and highways will be increased. As you can see on the map below, it is immediately east of the Pajaro River, our county line.

  • Also, if approved, it will eliminate 2000 acres of agricultural land. It will be a “foot-in-the-door” to other developments along Highway 25, essentially creating a future new city between Gilroy and Hollister.

  • If this is successful in San Benito County it might spur similar initiatives in other places, avoiding good land-use planning protections.

We encourage you to look at the Coalition to Protect San Benito County’s website at www.protectsanbenitocounty.org for more information. If you agree with their concerns, please consider helping them by making a monetary contribution through their website or by sending a check to Protect San Benito, P.O. Box 150, San Juan Bautista, CA 95045.
